Javier Sotomayor Sanabria, born on October 13, 1967, is a retired Cuban track and field athlete who made his mark in the high jump. His exceptional abilities and record-breaking performances have solidified his status as one of the most renowned athletes in the history of the sport.

Sotomayor's journey began in his hometown of Limonar, Cuba. From a young age, he displayed immense talent and dedication, mastering the techniques of the high jump and setting new standards. In 1988, at the age of 20, he set a world record of 2.43 meters, a feat that earned him widespread recognition.

However, despite his impressive achievements, Sotomayor was denied the opportunity to compete at the 1988 Olympics due to a boycott imposed by Cuba. Nevertheless, he continued to excel on the international stage, becoming world champion in 1993 and claiming the gold medal at the 1997 Pan American Games. His exceptional jumping skills and consistent performances made him a dominant figure in the high jump for over a decade.
